Keloid is an abnormal and excessive growth of tissue on the skin, resulting from trauma to the skin due to injury, abrasion, surgical procedures, tattoos, or piercings. Keloids differ from the normal wound healing process.
Keloids appear as raised, firm, shiny, sensitive, and sometimes painful lesions in areas that have experienced trauma.
Keloid can occur anywhere on the body. It is most commonly seen in areas such as:
Genetic predisposition, skin type, the severity of the injury, and the location of the wound play significant roles in the formation of keloids.
While the exact cause of keloid formation is not fully understood, if left untreated, keloids do not pose any problems other than cosmetic (aesthetic) concerns.
It is known that keloids do not transform into cancer or any other disease. However, if left untreated, they do not regress or disappear. Keloids can be mistaken for skin cancers. To rule this out, a tissue sample may need to be taken, followed by a pathological examination.
Although the likelihood of transformation into cancer is extremely low, continuous trauma to a keloid (such as scratching or hitting) may, in very rare cases, lead to the development of skin cancers.
