Pilonidal Sinus, unlike ingrown hairs where the hairs grow inward, is a condition that occurs when shed hairs from the body enter skin pores, create a nest for themselves, and accumulate in that area.
Ingrown hair is commonly seen in the coccyx, groin, and armpit areas; however, it can occur anywhere on the body.
After the formation of an ingrown hair, this condition does not resolve or disappear on its own.
Intervention is necessary to eliminate this nest, particularly in the case of Pilonidal Sinus (ingrown hair). Various treatments are available for this, including surgical or laser procedures.
In the case of Pilonidal Sinus, the choice between surgery and laser treatment is determined by the size and complexity of the ingrown hair. If appropriate, laser treatment is preferred because it is a quick procedure lasting about 10-15 minutes under local anesthesia in an office setting. The patient can resume normal activities after the procedure. However, in advanced and complicated cases of ingrown hair, laser treatment may not be a suitable option, and surgery for ingrown hair should be considered.
