Is it harmful to have moles removed?

Is it harmful to have moles removed?

What is a mole?

"A mole (nevus)" is a skin lesion typically found on or raised from the skin, varying in number from approximately 20 to 200 on most individuals. It is formed by the clustering of cells that produce the melanin pigment, giving color to the skin.

Why do moles form?

While some moles (nevus) are present from birth, others can develop later. Although most moles are usually benign, some nevi have the potential to transform into a type of cancer called malignant melanoma. Therefore, regular monitoring of all moles is necessary.

Are moles harmful?

Removing moles, especially those that are rapidly growing, asymmetrical, have a large diameter, newly appeared with itching and pain, exhibit changes in color, or have been subjected to trauma (such as on the palms, soles, or belt line),may be recommended. When suspicious conditions are detected in monitored moles, it is essential to have moles removed for histopathological diagnosis.

Is getting a mole removed harmful?

The answer to the commonly asked question by doctors, "Is it harmful to remove a mole?" is that surgically removed moles do not have the potential to turn into cancer. If there is suspicion of cancer, removal is already necessary. Contrary to what is often thought, removing a mole (nevus) does not have any harm, and some problems may arise, such as infection or unwanted conditions like scarring at the site where the mole is removed.

Can moles turn into cancer?

Not all moles on the body turn into cancer. However, some moles can transform into cancer over time. Melanoma, a type of mole (nevus) cancer known as malignant melanoma, can arise through changes in existing moles. The majority of mole removal procedures are performed for cosmetic reasons, with only a small portion conducted due to suspected cancer. Contrary to common belief, if suspicious moles are not removed, a serious cancer risk may be overlooked. It is also known that removing a benign mole does not lead to the formation of mole or skin cancer.
